If you own a home in Jersey (Bergen County) and decide that you’re gonna live in your own basement, not even rent it out, you can’t. Even if you get a certified (and even unionied) general contractor to bring everything up to code and get every little damn thing inspected and get approved (after $$$’s of fees), you can’t. Why? Wonderful government idiots decided to have these pleasant restrictions on homeowners who decide they want to live in their basements. And to top it off, the annoying mofo neighbors (who have nothing to do with their pathetic lives) will call in and rat your ass if you decide to.
What’s more incredible, the city official will actually take out their precious time to come and fine you $2000 and give you 3 days to clear out your stuff.
If the midwest is the heart of America, Jersey is the anus of America.
