Usana RESET Weight Loss Challenge is Retarded

I’m sure all of you have seen those “weight loss” challenges. My girlfriend is on a fitness high, so she’s doing all kinds of weird physical challenge crap. I’m a fitness junkie myself but I’m content with just going to the gym.

Usana (a network marketing company selling health/beauty products) sponsored a 6 week challenge to see who can lose the most weight in 6 weeks. Of course, there’s money in it… $2k for 1st place, $1k for 2nd place, and $500 for 3rd place. Supposedly “hundreds” of people entered. Of course, I’m certain it’s a way for them to get free pictures that they can plaster on their ads to promote their product. As a marketer/entrepreneur, I commend them for doing it.

Fast forward 6 weeks..

My gf has lost 10 lbs. It doesn’t sound like a lot but she weighed 115 before. (Actually she started out @ higher…. meaning this RESET challenge wasn’t the beginning of her fitness journey.) People who’ve lost weight (or have tried to) know that it gets exponentially harder to lose weight because your body reaches a ’saturation’ level. If you’re a fat ass who weighs 300 lbs, the first 100lbs is gonna be a breeze if you stick to the plan, eat right, and exercise. But once you get to 200, you’ll notice that the next 30 or 40 is INCREDIBLY super super hard.

So I’m watching this “award” ceremony after the challenge is over at some hotel. First I thought they were going to do the whole network marketing presentation before they announce the winner, but luckily they didn’t (I guess the organizer felt bad that the event started 30 F*CKING MINUTES late). I noticed a couple of things.

1. My girlfriend ACTUALLY gets chosen as top 10 contestant, meaning they show her before and after pics on the big screen. Sure she wasn’t a fat ass before but she’s the only one who actually gained definition in arms/tummy/legs/etc.

2. The people that entered, for most part, were bunch of morbidly fat people. When people saw before and after pics, they were cheering. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes: what are these people clapping for? The fact that these people finally realized tht dey were bunch of lard asses who went on crazy unsustainable diets encouraged by ridiculous financial motivation? 30 lbs in 6 weeks? Ok… yeah i’m sure this fat ass is gonna keep his weight off. And what are these people in the audience clapping at? These people were MORBIDLY OBESE… they got their shit together and lost a bit of weight? They STILL look like shit and are STILL fat. Granted, that ey have taken control and are working towards a goal. Yes, I give them that. Trying is 99% otf the work. But come on… talk about celebrating the mediocre.

3. This is the most annoying part of all this: this was a total popularity contest. All you had to do was bring a lot of family and friends to scream and cheer for you to receive your “votes”. The lady that had the MOST visible body shape change received the least number of votes, because obviously… HER FAMILY and FRIENDS WEREN’T THERE to scream. In fact, the dude that received the most hollerin’ and screamin’ was an ex-military guy. His before and after pics? Lame. The dude just stuck his gut out in the before pic and sucked it in for the after pic. No visible changes to the arm or the waist width. Yet, according to the crowd, apparently he lost the most weight.

Let me guess. He’s an Usana associate. His family, friends, downline/upline were there. Duh.

Usana corporate people. I hope you read this and realize how gay this event was. How do I know? Well, I blogged about this gayness, didn’t i?

Yahoo Search Marketing ACTUALLY checks for click frauds

I have a custom PPC tracking software and I’ve noticed that Yahoo Search Marketing (YSM) atually billed me for less clicks than my software actually tracked:

For example:

Feb 8, 2010 - My software detected 457 clicks but YSM charged for only 396 clicks
Feb 9, 2010 - Detected 454 clicks but YSM charged for only 376 clicks.

According to Yahoo click fraud guidelines:

Will your Click Protection System detect if my competitor tries to click on my links?
We do not approve of repetitive clicking by competitors on each other’s links. Our Click Protection System is designed to recognize certain repetitive clicks and we work to prevent such clicks from being charged to our advertisers.

Weird characters when parsing CSV in PHP

For some reason, if you do this PHP

$csv_file = file_get_contents(site_url($file_name));
$csv_lines = explode(”n”, $csv_file);

a CSV line like this

Campaign Name Ad Group Name Component Type …

turns into a weird line like this:

377376C^@a^@m^@p^@a^@i^@g^@n ^@N…

This has to do with PHP’s character encoding issues.

Here’s the easier way to take care of this problem:

$csv1 = file($csv_file);
$csv2 = implode($csv1);
$csv3 = iconv(”UTF-16″,”ISO-8859-1″,$csv2);
$csv = explode (”n”,$csv3);

This will solve that character issue.

Burbank, one of the better well-to-do suburbs of Los Angeles that is home to some of the big companies like NBC and Warner Brothers, is joining the ranks of smaller but (crappier) California cities in real estate foreclosures:

Regional foreclosure filings surged 63% in 2009, triple that of California and the nation, as more area homeowners struggled to make mortgage payments, according to a widely cited real estate report released Thursday.

Burbank is a white collar area with predominantly upper middle class white folks. Low crime, high income, blah blah. According to City Data, Burbank has

2008 crime index of 218 vs. average national 320
estimated median household income in 2008: $62,259 (it was $47,467 in 2000)

By any measure, Burbank is a nice neighborhood with money flowing through it, thanks to entertainemnt

So apparently, foreclosures DO happen to nice towns. I thought financial disasters only occur to fat, lazy, and ugly people.
